Banned Books Week with Comics!

Sept 21-27 is Banned Books Week where we celebrate banned books and the freedom to read. This year there is a focus on Banned Comics and Graphic Novels in conjunction with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, on organization that helps fight for the rights of comic book creators, readers and distributors. Here’s a link to their Banned Book Week Handbook:

Alt Press Fest 2012 Returns

For most of us Alt Press Fest 2012 is now buried in the past, however every once in a while something comes back to remind us.  In fact it reminds me of this song.

Anyway, Heather House wrote up this delightful blog entry about her experience back in July.  Check it out here.

Thanks so much.  We are very happy that you had such a great time.

And feel free to relive Alt Press Fest 2012 by visiting our Alt Press Fest tag.

Erratum or corrigendum ~ Why the Alt Press Fest Collaborative Zine & Patrick Weeks weren’t present (’till 8:23pm…)

Hello Friends,

Saturday July 7, 2012 was the day to be done w/making everyone included & all wanting one a copy of the first Alt Press Fest Zine anthology of collaborative content.

It got done, but not before 8 o’clock that eventing!

Here are a few sampling photos, but rest assured that there will be a tangible one for, in time. Each “cover” is a re-used file folder from The City Library. The title is spray paint stenciled and bull clipped onto the  contents of saddle-stich-stapled paper. These photos, beginning w/the cat are credited to: Evan Jed Mammot (left) Nick & Erin Potter (right), Jess Smart Smiley (left) Travis Gray (right) Yours Truly (left) Salt Lake City Film Festival (right.)

Without boring you about the trials & tribulations faced throughout the process; please accept a sincere statement of gratitude to all involved because you’re willing to try, i.e. FAIL. Really wish I was simply sitting at table with the personal work I prepared & got to see you. Shucks… If you’d like to view some of it—>  patrick weeks.tumblr.com

So, here we go again with completing a project that has been a labor of love + lessons for transcendence in the independent publishing arenas!

Thank you~Patrick Weeks

Carry on!

Alt Press Fest 2012 Spotlight: Night Sweats

The amount of musical talent we have this year playing the APF 2012 is staggering.  If you haven’t heard Night Sweats check them out.  They’re pretty awesome.  Night Sweats, consist of Dick Diamond, Mike Drone, David Payne, Stephen Chai, and Chris Controller.  You can catch them playing at many of SLC’s fine dirty little bars, like Urban Lounge and Bar Deluxe.  Give them a listen and view their band page for more info.

Alt Press Fest 2012 Spotlight: Book Arts Program

The Book Arts Program has been a part of the  J. Willard Marriott Library since 1995.  Students are trained in a fully equipped studio to use traditional printing techniques combined with the modern techniques of today.  Some of these techniques include photo engraving, printing and book binding.  Also, last year SLC Mayor Ralph Becker awarded the Book Arts Program with the “Service to the Arts by an Organization” award, for all of the amazing work they’re doing!

View the Book Arts Program website for more details and come see what they have in store for us during APF 2012!
