Greetings from Japan!

I Really ZIne-k So

If you’re following us on Facebook (and you really, really should be–just search for “Alt Press”), then you’ve glimpsed the inter-cultural amazingness currently displayed on Level 2 at the Main Library.

We’re talking about zines from Japan!

In a first-ever international outreach experiment, we shipped off some of our precious zine collection (via good old snail mail) to Kanda University of International Studies, about an hour east of Tokyo, Japan.

Parcel Contents

With our help former library employee and GNZAP enthusiast Sarah A. Custen taught a group of Japanese college freshman the ins and outs, the history and mystery (if you will) of zine culture.

Educational Materials

Then the Kanda students had a go at turning a semester’s worth of writing assignments into their very own zines, in less than a week’s time!

Hard at Work

This was their first experience with the medium, and the results are diverse, unique, and charming, a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the thoughts and hearts of our friends from the other side of the world.

Translation

But don’t take our word for it! (Ba-dum-bum)

Come check out their zines, now part of the collection on Level 2 at Main.

And stay tuned for future collaborations with our friends from abroad!
