Just finished reading this book recently by David Small. I have yet to read his children’s books, but Small’s simple pencil and watercolor work lends itself to illustration. The writing is quite impressive. It is a painful, uncomfortable series of recollections of growing up in an unloving, bitter, crazy family. That Small is as well-adjusted as he seems to be is a testament to his therapist and his own ability to forgive and thrive. Definitely for the adult reader, though probably many younger readers can relate to the author’s feelings of estrangement, helplessness and anger.
